For most people the ski day begins with a ride up the mountain on either the gondola Streuboden or the Expo-gondola Doischberg Beginners may initially stay at the bottom of the slopes in a special beginners area with its own lift in the Skiwies'n Lords area, which also has handy slopeside rentals as well as several cafes to take a rest in. Most of the terrain is simply fun. The pistes are primarily blues and reds but powder fields all around offer wide expanses to carve up. Experts can head further off piste with a guide in to the trees, there's also a slalom stadium for racers and a several groomed black pistes. The Expo Gondola, which was added as recently as 2001, is so named because it was originally built to carry people across the 2000 World EXPO at Hanover in Germany. The Leitner built eight-seater was famous at the event because of its bright yellow cabins. The comfortable cabins are large enough for users to carry their skis inside, rather than requiring the traditional gondola requirement of an external rack. The gondola doubled the route's capacity from 1000 skiers per hour offered by the old T Bar lift it replaced to 2000 skiers and boarders per hour. The lift is 1576m (about a mile) long and has a top speed of five metres (17 feet) per second. Cross country skiers are well looked after with 40km of trails through the woods and across the snow covered meadows. This links in to a larger network of 110km around the Pillerseetal.
