I had a wonderful holiday in Yllas, Finland. Not a place to go if you feel the cold though! I went in February and the temperature at the top was around -20c and -15c at the bottom. You don't get wet though, no matter how much time you spend horizontally because the snow is so dry. Terrible for making snowballs, they just fall apart in your (freezing cold) hand.
It may not be a resort for the purist but for me, as an intermediate with a thirst for speed and a fear of narrow runs with drops at the side, it was ideal. The slopes are wide, uncrowded, perfectly maintained and mogul-free. The locals are well mannered on the slopes and appreciate others to be the same. I think I only saw one blader all week and even the boarders behaved themselves (my son included). There is a floodlit black run which is great fun but very tiring.
Drinks are pricey but not prohibitively so and the food at the lunch cabins and bars etc. on the slopes is reasonably priced and of good quality.
I marked the Apres-ski category as 3* (good), which I feel is a little generous but I didn't really take much advantage of it anyway. After skiing each day I relaxed in the pool and jucuzzi and had a drink in the tranquil confines of my room before dinner.
My son (21 years) and I had a great holiday and would definitely go back but maybe a little later in the year; I hear April is very good. |
